Baja California Sur stands out for its rich biodiversity and natural beauty, which makes it a unique and valuable region from an environmental and tourism point of view. The importance of the biodiversity in this area is reflected in its varied flora and fauna, which includes endemic and endangered species.
That is why organizations such as World Wildlife Fund (WWF Mexico) and Airbnb are joining forces with the Ministry of Tourism and Economyand the State Tourism Trust of BCS in the project Big 7: The seven must-see species in Baja California Suran initiative that aims to promote the ecosystem conservation while boosting the regenerative tourism.
WWF points out that the name of the project refers to seven marine species that can be cared for by practicing regenerative tourism:
- Gray whale
- Humpback whale
- Blue whale
- Whale shark
- Sea lions
- Sea turtles
- Rocky reefs
In an unprecedented collaboration in the state, Airbnb, WWF and the Government of the State of Baja California Sur created a project that not only seeks to inform tourists about sustainable practicesbut also to actively promote the conservation of species of marine fauna and contribute to the local economy of cooperatives and ecotourism MSMEs, the environmental organization said.
Maribel CollinsSecretary of Tourism and Economy of the Government of BCS, said that in her state they are proud of the vast natural wealth and biodiversity they have, which they can enjoy 365 days a year.
"Therefore, we welcome initiatives such as Airbnb that contribute to good practices within the tourism sector and promote a culture of care and protection among both locals and visitors," he said.
The "Big 7: The seven must-see species" project seeks to transform tourism into an experience that benefits local communities and the environment, with the goal of positioning Baja California Sur as an international benchmark in regenerative and socially responsible tourism.
WWF said in a statement that regenerative tourism seeks to create a positive impact on nature and society.
"This alliance seeks to turn tourism into an ally of environmental preservation and the restoration of the local environment," he said.
Through this alliance, a new Immersion Guide to Regenerative Tourism and a series of informative sessions to improve the capacities of local entrepreneurs, always keeping in mind the economic, socio-cultural and environmental aspects of the destinations.
