Pemex's Sustainability Plan approved; zero net emissions by 2050 is the goal
This plan was authorized by the Board of Directors and is based on five pillars, with specific lines of action and goals for each pillar.

Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) has set a goal for 2050 of operating with net zero emissions and have designed a Sustainability Plan to transit on that route.

On March 1, the Board of Directors of the state-owned company authorized the Petróleos Mexicanos Sustainability Planwhich is aligned with the strategic objective of the Institution's Business Plan to consolidate the path towards sustainable performance, said Pemex andn a press release.

Octavio Romero OropezaPemex's Chief Executive Officer, stressed that the challenge to generate the energy that society needs requires a responsible and committed perspective, which recognizes the value of the climate actionThe different conditions and advances that exist in societies around the world, which are reflected in different starting points towards the same objective of net zero emissions by 2050.

"On the road to sustainable performance and as a productive state-owned company, Pemex has a clear contribution to Mexico's energy self-sufficiency and its transition to a scenario of efficient, safe and low-emission operations; this, in an environment of changes in the global energy matrix driven by climate action, within a framework of social responsibility that incorporates the perspective of sustainability in decision-making," he said.

It should be noted that the Pemex Sustainability Plan is in line with the vision of sustainable development of the United Nations and the commitments made by the authorities of Mexico.

"Within the framework of current national legislation and in line with the efforts and commitments to climate action assumed by the Government of Mexico, this Sustainability Plan of Petróleos Mexicanos clearly establishes Pemex's goals to reduce emissions by 2030 and, in congruence with the perspectives on the evolution of the national energy sector, sets out ambitions towards 2050 on net zero emissions," Romero Oropeza emphasized.

The goals established in the Plan were defined based on the opportunities and challenges identified in the Pemex value chain and its business model.

This plan is based on five pillars of sustainability that set out strategies, actions and goals.

1. GHG emissions and energy transition

Reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions

Target 2030:
- From 2024, achieve a minimum E&P gas utilization level of 98%.
- By 2030, achieve a 30% reduction in methane emissions.
- Zero routine gas flaring in E&P by 2030.

Target 2050:
- Net zero emissions.

Environment

Reduce and mitigate environmental impact and strengthen actions for biodiversity conservation.

Target 2030:
- Reduce the rate of water use in industrial transformation operations: 39% in refineries; 42% in CPG and 76% in ethane derivatives; 50% in methanol and aromatics production; 9% in ammonia.
- Double the level of water reuse in refineries (56.4 MMm3).
- Remediate at least 361 ha of environmental liabilities (in the 2024-2030 horizon).
- Reduce SOx emissions at gas processing complexes by 90%.
- Reach at least 2,000 hectares of protected natural areas.

Operational safety

Reduce process safety and occupational health risks and prevent personal and industrial accidents to improve industrial safety performance.

Target 2030:
- Zero findings of non-conformities of the SSPA system.
- Attention to 100% of Type A audit findings.
- Attention to 100% of Type A Risks.
- Improve the frequency index to 0.21.
- Reduce the process safety event frequency rate to 1.3.
- Zero fatalities.
- Ensure 100% of exposure control to biological, physical and/or chemical agents.

4. People and social value

Strengthen the relationship with the communities through social responsibility actions that contribute to improve people's lives and promote community prosperity, in accordance with the SDGs.

Target 2030:
- Benefit at least 800,000 people, with more than 50% being women.
- Intervene at least 700 public education campuses.
- Expand coverage to agrarian nuclei, cooperatives, ejidos and/or communities in all priority states. Benefit at least 16 state governments and 30 municipal governments.
- Achieve at least 10% of actions oriented to the infrastructure axis.
- Intervene at least 130 public spaces.

5. Corporate responsibility and transparency

Foster a culture of compliance to prevent compliance, fraud and corruption risks and strengthen corporate ethics and integrity.

Target 2030:
- To achieve compliance with at least 90% of the comprehensive training program in the Pemex Cumple area.
- Ensure the application of due diligence to third parties to at least 90%.

This plan obtained the favorable opinion of the Sustainability Committee and in its preparation it had the support of Standard & Poor's Global Commodity InsightsThe company, an internationally renowned consulting firm, is recognized for its expertise in advising in the areas of energy transitionemissions, low-carbon options, emissions and environmental management.

Romero Oropeza indicated that the Sustainability Plan establishes the company's positioning and commitment towards ethical and sustainable performance that reinforces the role of Pemex as a lever for development and as an agent for change in the energy sector national in the field of climate action.
