Gran Acuario Mazatlán Mar de Cortés, an example of sustainability in the region

In addition to its architecture, the oceanic research institute gives life to this project where 200 marine species live.

Los Cabos, BCS. November 9, 2023. In the Sea of Cortés Region there are important examples of sustainabilityincluding the Great Mazatlan Sea of Cortez Aquariumin Sinaloa.

It was created jointly by 18 specialists, with the challenge of creating a space where anyone could understand that they are part of nature and that those who live in Mazatlan would feel rooted in it.

"For us, to think of a space that could not make us understand that we are not the ones who dominate nature or even destroy it, but that we are part of it, was an incredible opportunity to somehow imagine a future that would lead us to relate much better with the ecosystem we inhabit," explained Tatiana Bilbao, architect and creator of the Gran Acuario Mazatlán Mar de Cortés project.

Bilbao, who has won multiple international architecture prizes, explained that the Large AquariumThe new facility, which cost 1,800 million pesos, consists of 17,000 square meters of construction, divided into three areas: exhibition, laboratories and services.

Here there are 5 million liters of water that fill the space where 200 million liters of water live. marine species and the space is divided into four themes of interest: one on deep-sea species, one on coastal species, one on forest species, and a final recreational area that includes a laboratory to protect and rescue endangered species.

Science, the heart of the aquarium

At first glance, one might think that the jewel of the Large Aquarium is the ocean tank, which holds 2,800,000,000 liters of water and supports 25 different marine species, but the reality is that laboratory spaces are the main focus.

"We are forming an oceanic research institute for the Sea of Cortez, with the sole purpose of reproducing and facilitating the creation of marine life. We already have two projects that we are going to start in January, which are the botete and a snook," said Ernesto Coppel Kelly, promoter of the Great Mazatlan Sea of Cortez Aquarium and Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Grupo Pueblo Bonito Golf & Spa Resorts.

"There are two species that will be reproduced in regions of Mazatlan, in coordination with researchers from Vancouver, Monterrey and Valencia so that they do not fall into repetitions and do not go to investigate what others are already investigating, but that the research processes are useful for society, to show the fish and reproduce marine food".

The collection of the Large Aquarium is nowadays incredibly rich, dedicated exclusively to the Sea of Cortez and its sustainable development.

The success can be understood by the level of visits it has had, since in only 6 months it has registered up to 600 thousand people, surpassing the initial expectation of having 200 thousand annually.

However, the success goes far beyond that, in the possibility of creating research for marine life that can improve the sustainability of the Sea of Cortez.
