"What does Trump want? That no migrants arrive. This year 20 percent of what arrived at the border last year has arrived. Let's keep it up and decrease this," said Fernandez de Castro, Director of the U.S.-Mexico Studies Center (USMEX) at UC San Diego.

He added that Mexico must move forward with actions and stop thinking that "maybe" it will do well with Trump.

"We are not going to do well with Trump. He brings it with Mexico, the issue is the border, the issue is migration, the issue is fentanyl and they are going to take advantage of the T-MEC to twist us in many things, they are going to use this 2026 revision for migration, for fentanyl. Let's get ahead of ourselves, we have to do it now, besides, it is in the best interest of Mexicans", he stressed.

While Victor, Professor of Innovation and Public Policy at UC San Diego, considered that what Mexico can do is put together a package of issues that are consistent with the interests of both countries and put it as voluntary measures to make a compromise with Trump and have him focus on other things.

"Reducing border problems with these kinds of voluntary agreements is a major opportunity actually, because even if Harris had won, this is an enduring problem in American politics. It wasn't a big issue in the 2020 election because 2020 was mostly about Covid, so that's one of the main opportunities," he commented.
