In 2015, as part of the Agenda 2030the world pledged, among other goals, to take action to ensure that by 2030 every human being on the planet would be able to count with drinking water and sanitationand, therefore, within the framework of the World Water Day that commemorates this March 22 the United Nations urged to accelerate change to achieve this goal.
The UN emphasized that this World Water Day is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the world to unite for water and accelerate progress together.
"Problems across the water cycle are undermining progress in major planetary conflicts: from health to hunger, from gender equality to jobs, education, industry, natural disasters and lack of peace," he stresses.
The commitment was embodied in the Agenda 2030 such as Sustainable Development Goal 6: the promise that everyone would have safely managed water and sanitation by 2030.
"Today, we are far from achieving this. Billions of people and countless schools, businesses, health centers, farms and factories are restricted because their human rights to water and sanitation have not yet been fulfilled," says the UN.
"There is an urgent need to accelerate change, to go beyond 'business as usual'."
The international body highlights that the latest data shows that governments need to work on average four times faster to meet SDG 6 on time, however, this is not a situation that can be solved by just one actor or group.
The UN adds that water affects everyone, so everyone needs to take action.
"No doubt this 2023 is the year to make commitments regarding water use and sanitation," he stresses.
The celebration of this world day coincides with the beginning of the UN Water Conference 2023 which is being held in New York. The conference will be a unique opportunity to seek solutions to the current water and sanitation crisis.
Governments and all stakeholders will come together at this event to make voluntary commitments to accelerate progress on SDG 6 and other internationally agreed water-related targets.
The commitments that will be embodied therein will make up the so-called Water Action AgendaThe plan is a rapid and transformative plan that can also reflect the individual action of every person on the planet.
