Volunteers collect 1.5 tons of garbage on Altata beaches
Volunteers convened by the Almejeras de Santa Cruz cooperative, carry out a cleanup day in front of the Altata bay, in Navolato.

Tires, plastics, cans, glass... 1.5 tons of garbage volunteers collected volunteers in front of the Altata Bayin Navolato, organized by the Almejeras de Santa Cruz Cooperativewhich chairs Yanett Miranda Castro.

The event took place on Friday morning and lasted an hour and a half, with the participation of 50 volunteers: a group of students from Culiacan Institute of Technologymembers of the cooperatives of Clamshells Santa Cruz, Lobas del Manglarand the Banas Guerrerasthe Altata neighborhood committeecommunity biologists, as well as Port Captaincy.

For the cleanup day, participants gathered before 9:00 a.m. at the Altata esplanade. They arrived with long-sleeved clothing and hats or caps to protect themselves from the sun; they took garbage bags and boarded the six boats that crossed them to the sector.

They started in the fishing shelter areainstalled three years ago with the support and guidance of the Mexican Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), and Pronatura Noroeste. It monitors the growth of the chocolate clamThis will allow the recovery of a species that, according to Yanett, 30 years ago yielded at least 30 tons of mollusks and is now scarce.

This refuge area is also the only one in the country that is registered in the Fisher ProgressThe company, which places it on the world map, means that it works in a sustainable manner, hand in hand with authorities and fishermen for a future for fishing.

"We come from having been born from a sea of abundance, but nowadays there are fewer and fewer resources in the sea and so we are forced to do different things if we want to continue living from fishing," he says, justifying the importance of the cleanup in the area.

On the sand, in the mangrove swamp and in the water, volunteers collected dozens of plastic and glass bottlesmainly.

The journey ended a kilometer and a half further on, at Punta ArenaThis area has become popular among some young people as "Hollywood", where a few times a year they gather to enjoy music, alcohol and razers, and where a large amount of garbage is generated.

Yanett invites interested people to join in these cleaning days, in order to keep the beach area clean, which contributes to the conservation of the chocolate clam and thus to the fishing activity and to guarantee the consumption of the product for a longer period of time.
