Generación distribuida en auge; México avanza hacia un modelo energético sustentable
Energy transition
Distributed generation on the rise; Mexico moves towards a sustainable energy model
The use of solar energy and other renewable sources boosts distributed generation in Mexico, reducing costs and emissions in homes, businesses and industries.

The distributed generationa from renewable energies is in full expansion in MexicoThe new energy efficiency system is a key alternative to reduce energy costs, reduce emissions and strengthen the energy autonomy of homes, businesses and industries.

This model, which allows for small-scale electricity production close to the point of consumption, has gained relevance thanks to technologies such as the photovoltaic solar panels and the small wind turbines. Unlike conventional power plants, on-site generated energy does not require long transmission lines, which optimizes efficiency and reduces losses.

One of the main drivers of the distributed generation boom in the country has been solar energy. With the possibility of installing photovoltaic systems on factory roofs, parking lots or unused land, more and more companies and individuals are opting for this solution to supply themselves with clean energy and reduce their dependence on the traditional electricity grid.

The figures of the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) reflect this growth. In 2014, only 4,396 interconnection requests were registered, while in 2023 the figure reached 76,101, totaling more than 411,000 in the last decade. Likewise, the installed capacity under this scheme has increased from 61.87 MW in 2014 to 3,361 MW in 2023, with 99.3 % of the projects based on solar energy.

Several factors have contributed to the success of distributed generation in Mexico:

  • Reduced technological costs: The lower cost of solar panels and storage systems has facilitated their adoption.
Fiscal incentives and government policies: Programs that encourage investment in clean energy have boosted the expansion of the sector.
  • Increased environmental awareness: Companies and citizens seek to reduce their carbon footprint and comply with international sustainability standards.
  • Advances in energy storage: New batteries make it possible to optimize the use of renewable energy, compensating for its intermittency.
Towards a more sustainable energy future

Mexico has an enormous potential to continue growing in distributed generationwith a market that is expanding as more sectors are adopting renewable energies. With an adequate regulatory framework and the continuous technological evolution, this model represents a key opportunity to move towards the energy transition and the decarbonization of the country.

The distributed generation not only promotes energy independence and economic savings, but also positions the company as a leader in the energy sector. Mexico as a benchmark in the use of renewable sources. This model has a positive impact on both the environment and the country's industrial competitiveness.
