Within the framework of the Summit 2024 Cities with a Future Without Fear of Actionof Sea of Cortez Forum, Cynthia Barzuna Gutierrez will be one of the main voices in the panel World Economic Forum - Oceans and Cities: Perspectives and Challenges.

Accompanied by leading experts such as Octavio Aburto Oropeza y Carlos Eduardo Correa EscafBarzuna Gutiérrez will talk about the implications of the global warming for the coastal citiesfrom environmental, economic and social perspectives. This panel, which will be moderated by Alfredo Girón Navahead of the Ocean Action Agenda of the World Economic Forumwill focus on the urgent challenges facing coastal cities due to the climate crisis.

A track record of commitment to ocean sustainability

Cynthia Barzuna is the Director of Ocean Action 2030a global coalition of volunteers dedicated to supporting countries in building a more sustainable and sustainable sustainable ocean economies. Under its leadership, this coalition works with member countries of the High Level Group for a Sustainable Ocean Economy (Ocean Panel), which promotes a model that balances marine protection, sustainable production and social equity.

Prior to assuming this position, Barzuna served as Deputy Minister of Water and Ocean Affairs of Costa Ricawhere he stood out for his work in the expansion of the Cocos Island National Park, achieving that Costa Rica protected 31% of its exclusive economic zone in 2021, a milestone in marine conservation. In addition, he has led the Environmental Impact Assessment Agency and has been part of several sustainable cities programs in his country.

A comprehensive approach to the future of coastal cities

Barzuna, who has a background in International Law and Trade from the Carlos III University of Madrid, will bring to the panel his legal and technical vision, highlighting the importance of collaborative management between nations and institutions to address the challenges that climate change imposes on coastal cities.

The approach that promotes Ocean Action 2030to build sustainable ocean economies through Sustainable Ocean Plans will be key to the forum discussions, where solutions that combine environmental protection with economic and social development will be sought.
