Scientist specializing in the Sea of Cortez will be at Summit 2023

Octavio Aburto Oropeza is a Mexican researcher and scientist who for many years has specialized in the study of the Sea of Cortezits biodiversity and habitats.

The academic is one of the speakers who will be at the Summit 2023 Prosperity: A Possible Purposeof Sea of Cortez Forumwhich will be held from November 8 to 10 in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur.

The lecture will be given by conference Fishing Communities in which he will present a new project with the Fishing Communities of the Sea of Cortés Regionits characteristics, operation and support.

Aburto is a professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography of the University of California at San Diego and 2010 winner of the Kathryn Fuller Science for Nature Fund Grant from World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and a professional photographer associated with the International League of Conservation Photographers.

The marine biologist has a master's degree in the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur D. from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, with the thesis: Variability in reef fish fisheries in the Gulf of California.

"My research has focused on marine reserves and commercially exploited marine species and their fisheries," he notes in his biography.

Aburto is coordinator of the Gulf of California Marine Program at Scripps, through which he has been working on studies involving Mexico and other Latin American countries such as Belize, Costa Rica and Ecuador, as well as the United States.

Through this program he has helped build a diverse academic environment that is effective in training students and professionals from these countries in field techniques, writing and presentation skills, and general professional development.

The scientist is also an explorer and professional photographer associated with the International League of Conservation Photographers and is a founder of dataMaresThe Gulf of California, a platform for informed decision making based on solid historical information from long-term monitoring data of coastal and marine ecosystems in the Gulf of California.

In 2014, Aburto received the Nature Conservation Award granted by the Secretary of the Environment of Mexico.
