Sea of Cortés region to integrate new natural protected areas

The National Tourism Development Fund (Fonatur) ceded to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) more than 16 thousand hectares to be decreed as federally protected areas, of which more than 10 thousand are located in the Sea of Cortés Region.

In an Agreement published on February 15, 2023, in the Official Journal of the Federation The total amount of land transferred by Fonatur to Semarnat is 16,414 hectares located in the following states:

  • Baja California Sur 8,064.69
  • Baja California 66.80
  • Sinaloa 1,921.87
  • Oaxaca 5,263.18
  • Guerrero 981.71
  • Quintana Roo 115.79

"These lands, located in the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo and Sinaloa, are home to species of flora and fauna representative of Mexico's biodiversity, some of which are endemic, threatened or in danger of extinction, making it necessary to protect them in order to achieve their biological conservation," said Semarnat.

As of the publication of this Agreement, Semarnat, through the CNational Omission of Natural Protected AreasThe company will carry out the corresponding procedures for issuing the declarations of Natural Protected Areain accordance with the applicable legal provisions.

The purpose of decreeing these areas as NPAs is to ensure the preservation and sustainable use of the territories without neglecting the ecosystems, their elements and functions, as well as to provide a propitious field for scientific research, according to Semarnat.

It should be noted that in the case of Sinaloapart of the land ceded by Fonatur to Semarnat corresponds to Espiritu Beachlocated in the municipality of Escuinapa, where some endemic species have their habitat.
